Question

Why does conduction happen mainly in solids and is not frequent in liquids and gases?

Solution

  1. Heat can be defined as the energy which flows from the body of a higher temperature to a body of lower temperature.
  2. In fluids, conduction is not a successful mode of heat transfer as inter-molecular distance is larger compared to solid.
  3. Due to the large intermolecular distance between the molecule, the transfer of heat is slow in liquid and gases.
  4. Due to the large inter-molecular distance, the chance of collision is less as compared to that of a solid.
  5. This is why conduction mainly happens in solid and not in liquids and gases.
