something floats of sinks depends on something called density (how heavy the thing is in comparison to how much it weighs). When people are alive the density of their body depends on things like how much air there is in their lungs or how much fat they have on their bodies. If you have learnt how to swim you should remember trying to learn how to float – some people find it easier than others depending on the make up of their body. When someone dies, once the air has come out of their lungs, their “density” becomes greater than water and they sink. After some time very little “animals” called micorobes start to eat bits from inside the body and this produces lots of gas. This then causes the density of the body to decrease again, as the gas is light, and that means that the body will float up to the surface of the water.
