Question

Why does dry HCl gas not change the colour of the dry litmus paper?

Open in App
Solution

Hydrogen ions change the colour of litmus.

In dry HCl, there are no H+ ions.

Ions are formed in aqueous solution. Both HCl and litmus are dry.

Hence there is no change in dry HCl and dry litmus paper.
