Question

Why does eutrophication lead to dead zones?

Open in App
Solution

Eutrophication:

  1. A process known as eutrophication occurs when a body of water gradually becomes partially or completely enriched with minerals and nutrients.
  2. Eutrophication causes dead zones because it deprives water bodies of oxygen and replaces it with phosphate and nitrogen.
  3. Because oxygen is required for function, only a small number of species can survive in a hypotonic environment.
  4. Eutrophication can be minimized by increasing climate change awareness and protection of lakes and water bodies.
