Question

Why does external fertilisation only takes place in water?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student

External fertilization occurs in aquatic organisms because the water act as a medium for the transfer of male gamete to the female gamete. The flagellated sperm must have fluid in which it can swim and the eggs lack a protective coat or shell (so that sperm can penetrate and fertilize them).
