Question

Why does Fluorine have higher ionization energy than Iodine?

Open in App
Solution

Ionization energy:

  1. Ionization energy is a measure of how difficult it is to remove an electron from an atom or ion, or how likely an atom or ion is to yield an electron.
  2. The loss of one electron usually occurs in the chemical species' ground state.

Reasons for Fluorine have higher ionization energy than Iodine:

  1. Fluorine's size is lower than that of iodine, it has higher ionization energy than iodine.
  2. Fluorine, on the other hand, appears to have a smaller shielding effect.
  3. As a result, fluorine's nucleus attracts more valence electrons than iodine's.
  4. Fluorine has a lower energy level than iodine, so it doesn't get as much protection.
  5. Hence, fluorine has a stronger nuclear effect on the electrons in its vicinity, which necessitates more energy to remove them.
  6. The new electron will be more repellent and as a result, it will need more energy to defeat this power.
