Question

Why does fructose have furanose structure even though it is 6 carbon??
Shouldn't it be pyranose??

Solution

Since Fructose is ketose sugar and ring formation occurs between carbon bearing -CHO/-CO group and 2nd last carbon of sugar molecule, in Fructose ring formation occurs between 2'C(Bears -CO group) and 5'C(2nd last carbon) carbon of the molecule. This brings 4C and 1O atoms in the ring. Clarifying again: In Aldose sugars, -CHO sits on1'C and in Ketose sugars -CO sits on 2'C.
