Why does it become very cold when the ice starts melting in cold countries?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Melting is the process of converting a solid-state of a substance to a liquid state.
  2. As we know 1kg of ice on meting absorbs 336000J of heat energy and 1kg of water on freezing will release 336000J of heat energy.
  3. Therefore, when the ice starts melting heat is absorbed from the atmosphere (336000J for every 1kg of ice) and temperature, falls into the surroundings. Thus, it becomes very cold.
