Question

Why does lime water turn milky when CO2 is passed through it?

Open in App
Solution

Carbon dioxide (CO2) turns lime water milky.

  • Limewater is an aqueous solution of Calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2].

Carbon dioxide reacts with limewater to produce a white precipitate of Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) which makes the solution to look cloudy or milky in appearance.

CO2(g)+Ca(OH)2(aq)CaCO3(s)+H2O(l)(Carbondioxide)(Calciumhydroxide)(Calciumcarbonate)(Water)

  • This test is often used to confirm the presence of these gases.
