Question

Why does lithium react slowly with bromine while other alkali metals react violently??

Open in App
Solution

Normally with halogens more electropositive elements show vigorous reactions and the reaction is slow if the electropositivity of the metal is low. Lithium due to its small size and high ionisation energy it shows very slow reaction with bromine, whereas other alkali metals are more electropositive shows violent reactions with bromine.
