Question 6
Why does menstruation occur?

Open in App
Solution

Menstruation is a process in which blood and mucus flow out every month through the vagina. This process occurs every month because when one egg is released from the ovary every month (ovulation), simultaneously the uterus (womb) prepares itself to receive the fertilised egg. Thus, the inner lining of the uterus called the endometrium thickens enriched with blood to nourish the future embryo. If the egg is not fertilised, then the lining of the uterus breaks down slowly and is discharged from the body in the form of blood and mucus from the vagina.
