Question

Why does non-metallic character increase on moving from left to right in a period?

Open in App
Solution

Non-metallic character: Non-metals are elements which gain electrons to acquire a negative charge on it.

Trends in period:

As we move across a period,

  • The atomic radius decreases along a period due to which the attraction between the nucleus and the outermost electrons increases.
  • Because of this attraction between nucleus and valence electrons, it is easier to gain electrons and difficult to lose electrons.
  • That's why non-metallic character increases on moving from left to right in a period.
