Question

Why does not magnet attracts other things such as paper, comb. Why do they attract metallic objects?

Open in App
Solution

Dear student

Paper, comb etc are not attracted by magnet because they are non- paramagnetic, diamagnetic or ferromagnetic substance or we can say they are the materials that do not contain unpaired electrons.

Magnet only attracts metals which contain unpaired electrons. This is because if there are unpaired electrons, there will be net electron spin that can interfere with the magnetic field of the magnet. If the metals do not possess the unpaired electrons, the electron spin of individual electrons will cancel each other, as a result the metals are not attracted by the magnetic field produced by magnet.
