Question

why does oxygen makes a triple bond if it gets stable at its diatomic stage

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Oxygen does not make a triple bond. It forms a double bond by sharing of 2 electrons from each O to form O2 diatomic molecule. Even by MOT, its bond order comes out to be 2 which signifies that it forms a double bond and not triple.
