Question

why does phenolphthalein turn pink in basic solution and colourless in acidic solution.?

Open in App
Solution

Phenolphthalein can be represented as HPh. Its a weak acid. It gets dissociated as HPh H+ + Ph-Colourless PinkIf you add base(OH- ion), the H+ and OH- reacts to produce water. Thus more and more amount of H+ is removed from the equilibrium. So the reaction proceeds to the right thus its pink in colour.when you add acid the amount of H+ is increased in the right, thus shifting the equilibrium towardsleft and its colourless.
