Question

Why does pressure increase when the volume decreases?

Open in App
Solution

  1. According to the kinetic theory of gases, in gas, the constituent particles or gas molecules collide with each other and also with the walls of the containing vessel.
  2. The pressure exerted on the walls of the containing vessel is due to the bombardment of the molecules on the walls of the containing vessel.
  3. The molecules are far from each other by large distances.
  4. If we decrease the volume of the gas, the gas molecules will be left with less space and will no longer be far from each other.
  5. They will start colliding with each other and also with the walls of the container repeatedly. This will increase the pressure.
  6. Hence, with the decrease in volume pressure increases.
