Question

Why does removing a terminal bud cause a plant to get bushier?

Open in App
Solution

When a seedling begins growth, it produces a growing tip, also known as a terminal (apical) bud. When stems are pruned or pinched back, the growth pattern of the plant is affected. If a terminal bud is removed, the growth of lateral buds is stimulated and the plant becomes bushier.
