Question

Why does sap exude from the cut end of the stem in some herbaceous plants?

Solution

  1. This pushing up of xylem sap is due to the root pressure. Root pressure continuously forces the water up through the xylem but it is difficult to determine the process when active transpiration is in process.
  2. The root pressure is a result of an active process i.e. involving expenditure of energy
