Question

Why does SH6 not exist, but SF6 exists?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,....... Sulfur exist in its highest oxidation state when it is combined with highly electronegative elements like F . Because of high electronegativity of fluorine, the +6 charge develop on S leads to contraction of d orbital which is favourable to overlap with F atoms. This contraction of orbital is not possible in case of H. Hence,SH6 not exists. Regards.
