Question

Why does sound require a medium to propagate why can't it propagate in vacuum?

Open in App
Solution

Sound is a disturbance that propagates through a medium. The disturbance then travels in the medium in form of waves. Hence it needs a medium for its propagation. Sound cannot propagate in a vacuum since there are no particles to vibrate in a vacuum. On the Moon, there is no medium, therefore on the Moon, one can not hear the sound produced by the others.
