Dear Student,
A split ring acts as a commutation which basically flips the connection of a given circuit.
In an A.C generator two rings work in side by side where for half cycle one is attached to on end of the rotating loop while the other is attached to another, end thus in one cycle they generate same emf but the current is positive in half cycle while negative in the next half cycle.
In a electric Motor ( run by ac current) the input current is already ac and is in form of positive-negative for half cycle respective. so by jsut having one split ring the motor rotates for positive half cycle then the ring rotates and flips the polarity of the circuit and the motor runs for next negative current cycle while still rotating in the same direction.
Regards.
