Question

Why does the bottle filled with water at 0 °C, bursts when kept in refrigerator?

Open in App
Solution

When water cools, it contracts up to 4 °C. but it starts expanding on further cooling below 4 °C and continues till it is cooled to 0 °C, the point at which it turns into ice. So, the volume of ice becomes more than that of water. When we placed a bottle full of water in a refrigerator where the temperature is below 0 °C, the water turns into ice and thereby the volume increases, hence the bottle will burst.
