Why does the filament of a bulb fuse and break even if there is no oxygen to burn it?

The filament fuse due to various reasons.an incandescent filament light bulb sometimes fails when the filament breaks - through shock or old-age, usually. Occasionally the broken filament short-circuits the supply connection, leading to a large (and dangerous) current surge.
