Question

Why does the friction increase when two surfaces are pressed against each other harder? [3 MARKS]

Open in App
Solution

Two factors : 1.5 Marks each

Since the friction is due to the interlocking of irregularities in the two surfaces which slide with respect to each other, it is obvious that the force of friction will increase if the two surfaces are pressed harder. Another reason is that the bonding between the atoms/molecules of those two sufaces will be stronger if they are pressed harder.

One can experience it by dragging a mat when no body is sitting on it and when a person is sitting on it.
