why does the intensity of secondary maximas keep on decreasing while moving to higher order maximas?

If case of diffraction of light , the maxima is formed due to the super position of wavelets generating from the a wave front , hence the intensity of secondary maxima keep on decreasing while moving to higher order maxima .
