Question

Why does the nose bleed at high altitude places?

Open in App
Solution

The concept used for the explanation:

  1. Atmospheric pressure: The pressure exerted by the components of the atmosphere on the earth's surface is called atmospheric pressure.
  2. As we move upwards from the earth's surface the density of the air decreases which in turn decreases the atmospheric pressure.

The explanation to the answer:

  1. Since the atmospheric pressure decreases as we move upwards from the earth's surface, the internal pressure of the blood vessels is more than the outside pressure.
  2. This causes blood vessels to rupture. Thus, nose or ear bleeding takes place at high altitudes.

Hence, the nose bleed at high altitude places.
