Question

Why does the process of diffusion in gases take place very fast?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Diffusion refers to the mixing of one substance with another caused by the motion or movement of its particles.
  2. Gases undergo diffusion very rapidly.
  3. Particles within gases move very rapidly in all directions.
  4. Atmospheric gases diffuse and dissolve in water.
  5. In general, the rate of diffusion of a gas depends upon its density, i.e. lighter gases diffuse more readily than heavier gases.
  6. As the space between constituent particles in gas increases, diffusion occurs more quickly.
  7. Consequently, gas particles have higher kinetic energy and travel faster.
  8. Therefore, diffusion in gases occurs very quickly.
