Question

Why does the solubility of a solute decrease with an increase in temperature?

Open in App
Solution

Solubility:

  • A homogenous combination of one or more solutes in a solvent is referred to as a solution.
  • A typical illustration of a solution is the addition of sugar cubes to a cup of tea or coffee.
  • Solubility is a quality that aids in the dissolution of sugar molecules.
  • Thus, the ability of a material (solute) to dissolve in a certain solvent may be characterized as solubility.
  • Any material that is dissolved in a solvent and is either solid, liquid, or gas is referred to as a solute.

Effect on solubility if the temperature increases:

  • The solute's solubility falls because the kinetic energy of the gaseous solute increases as the temperature rises.
  • As a result, its molecules are more likely to escape the solvent molecule's attraction and return to the gas phase.
