Question

Why does the sun appear reddish in the morning?

Open in App
Solution

  1. The phenomenon of bending of light when it passes from one medium to another medium is called the refraction of light.
  2. At sunrise, the sun is near the horizon in the early morning.
  3. Because of the long distance to be traveled, most of the blue color (or other colors with a small wavelength) in the sunlight is scattered.
  4. As a result, the light that reaches our eyes during the sunrise is predominantly red (since it has a longer wavelength).
  5. Therefore, the sky appears reddish in the morning.
