Question

Why does the value of the dip increase as we move from the equator to pole?

Open in App
Solution

Earth's magnetic field is a vector, which can be resolved into its horizontal and vertical components. The angle between the earth's magnetic field and its horizontal component is called the angle of dip.

1) Angle of dip depends on the angles made at the poles and at the equator.

2) The angle varies from 0°at the equator to 90°at the pole. As we move from the equator to the pole, the angle increases, and thus the angle of dip also increases.

3) On the magnetic equator, the angle of dip formed is 0° as here at the equator needle rests horizontally and at other magnetic places angle of dip formed lies between 0 and 90 degrees. So, the angle of dip increases from the equator to the pole.
