Question

Why does water diffuse out of a cell if it is placed in a hypertonic solution?

Open in App
Solution

Movement of water:

  1. Water moves across the cell through the plasma membrane by the process of osmosis.
  2. In a hypertonic solution, the concentration of water is lesser when compared to the cytoplasm of the cell.
  3. Hence, water from the cytoplasm moves out of the cell to maintain equilibrium.
