Question

Why doesn't friction act on the rocket when it is launched immediately ?

Open in App
Solution

Right at the moment of launch, when a rocket starts moving upward, it is moving very slowly and to a very rough approximation air friction will be proportional to the square of the velocity.

So friction will initially be very low.

But as the rocket accelerates to high velocities, especially if it is intended to leave the Earth’s atmosphere, frictional forces will become much more important.
