Question

Why doesn't the Moon fall on the Earth?

Open in App
Solution

Gravity is a force of attraction between objects with masses. When an object that is not supported by anything falls due to the force of gravity of another object, it is said to be in free fall. For example, the Moon falling towards the Earth. However, it also has an orbital speed from the momentum gained during its formation and follows the same curve as the Earth's surface. As these paths are parallel, the Moon perpetually falls on the Earth without even touching it.
