Why don't we measure all lengths in just one standard unit of length such as the metre?

The unit of length can be taken as meter, centimeter, kilometer, or millimeter. But this is done to make measurements convenient for us.
For example, it will be convenient to measure the length of cloth in meters.
But to measure the distance between Bangalore and Mysore which is about 150000 meters.
It is convenient to use Kilometers as the measuring unit.
