Question

Why dry HCL does not change the colour of dry litmus paper ?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student

Dry HCl is a gas, it is not able to release H+ ion and thus, lacks its acidic properties and does not change the colour of litmus paper in the dry form but if it is kept in aqueous form then it will release H+ ion and will show its acidic nature.
Thus, we can conclude that acids need an aqueous medium to show its acidic properties.
