why electric room heaters are provided with a polished metal surface

There are two reasons for this:

1. The heat produced can be reflected from the surfaces and thus more heat will be available towards the front of the heater.
2. The heater itself will absorb lesser heat and thus will have lesser chances of catching fire by getting heated up to a higher temperature.
