Question

Why electrolysis of an aqueous solution of Sodium sulfate Na2SO4 containing litmus develops a blue colour at the cathode and red colour at the anode?

Solution

During the electrolysis of Sodium sulfate Na2SO4 the following reactions takes place at cathode and anode.

Cathode:2H2O(l)+2e-H2(g)+2OH-(aq)Anode:2H2O(l)4H+(aq)+O2(g)+4e-(aq)

Due to the formation of OH- ion at cathode which is base, it turns red litmus blue whereas due to the formation of H+ ions at anode which is acid, it turns blue litmus red.
