Emission standards are required to set specific limits to the amount of pollutants that can be released into the environment. Emission standards not only focus on regulating pollutants released by automobiles but also the ones released from industries, power plants, and small equipments such as lawn mowers and diesel generators. Emission standards generally regulate the emission of nitrogen oxide, sulphur oxide, particulate matter or soot, and carbon monoxide or volatile hydrocarbons.
