Question

Why Flourine can react in dark with hydrogen whereas not the same case for the other halogens?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Fluorine can react with hydrogen even in dark while the other halogen atoms donot. This is due to the high affinity of fluorine towards hydrogen. Hydrogen has 1 electron in its outermost shell whereas flourine atom has 7 electrons in its outermost shell. Both hydrogen and fluorine also have comparable size therefore, they share a pair of electron to acquire stable electronic configuration. Also, due to high electronegativity of F, electron of H is easily attracted towards it.
