Why fossil fuels are major fuels used for generating electricity

Power plants burn carbon fuels such coal, oil or gas to generate steam that drives large turbines that produce electricity. These plants can generate electricity reliably over long periods of time.
A major advantage of fossil fuels is their capacity to generate huge amounts of electricity in just a single location. When coal is used in power plants, they are very cost effective. Coal is also in abundant supply.
