Why is genetic recombination so important?

Open in App
Solution

Genetic recombination:

  1. Genetic recombination is the process of rearrangement of DNA sequences caused due to breakage of chromosomes.
  2. Recombination occurs during meiosis in which the non-sister chromatids recombine to produce new pairs of chromosomes.
  3. In recombination, the DNA sequences are broken and recombined to generate new combinations of DNA sequences.
  4. It usually occurs during meiosis when the homologous chromosomes pair up and swap their DNA sequences.
  5. It gives rise to a novel set of gene sequences and involves only homologous chromosomes.
  6. It helps enhance genetic diversity and enables organisms to adapt to changing environments.
