Question

Why Gibbs free energy is called free energy?

Open in App
Solution

The reason for Gibb's free energy to be called free energy:

  1. Gibb's free energy is called free energy because Gibb's energy is easily available anytime.
  2. If required the reaction can get this energy without having to work for it.
  3. The change in Gibb's free energy is the sum of enthalpy and the product of temperature and entropy of the system.
  4. It can predict the direction in which a chemical reaction is moving.

Relation of Gibb's free energy

G=H-TS

Here,

G=ChangeinGibbsfreeenergyH=ChangeinenthalpyS=ChangeinentropyT=Tempratureinkelvin

Hence, Gibb's free energy is called free energy.
