Question

Why gold is not corroded?

Open in App
Solution

Corrosion: The slowly eating of the surface of some metals, such as iron when they are exposed to moist air for a long period of time is known as corrosion.

Gold:

  1. Gold is a yellow precious metal with a chemical element of atomic number 79.
  2. Gold is a bright, slightly orange-yellow, dense, soft, malleable and ductile metal in a pure form.

Gold does not get corroded:

  • Gold does not get corroded because it is one of the least reactive metals in the reactivity series and it does not react with air or moisture easily.
  • Gold does not get affected by oxygen and most acids.
  • Gold is more stable than any other compounds such as sulfides or oxides.
  • Due to the less reactive nature of Gold, it is known as a noble metal.
