Question

Why H2SO4 cannot be used along with KI in the conversion of an alcohol to an alkyl iodide?

Open in App
Solution

In presence of sulfuric acid, KI produce HI.
2KI+H2SO42KHSO4+2HI
Since, H2SO4 is oxidising agent, it oxidises HI.
2HI+H2SO4I2+SO2+H2O
As a result, the reaction between alcohol and HI to produce alkyl iodine cannot occur. Therefore sulphuric acid can't be used.
