Question

Why hard water is unfit for drinking purpose

Open in App
Solution

  • The hard water contains soluble salts of calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg).
  • It does not give lather with soap. this is because of the precipitation of the insoluble soap.
  • The hardness of water is due to chloride of calcium and bicarbonate of magnesium.
  • If hard water is used for drinking purposes, it will cause a stone formation in the stomach.
  • Since hard water is not free from dissolved salts, it is not suitable for drinking purposes.
