Question

Why HNO3 is not used in place of dil.H2SO4 to acidify the KMnO4 solution in volumetric analysis?

Open in App
Solution

In volumetric analysis, KMnO4 solution is used for estimation of ferrous salts, oxalic acid etc.
HNO3 is an strong oxidising agent and can oxidise ferrous salts to ferric salts. It can also oxidise oxalic acid to carbon dioxide.Hence, HNO3 is not used in place of dil.H2SO4 to acidify the KMnO4 solution in volumetric analysis.
