Question

Why inductor behaves as a short circuit?

Open in App
Solution

Inductor:

  1. It is a passive 2-terminal electrical component that stores energy in a magnetic field when subjected to electric current.
  2. In other words, the inductor is a conductor wound on a coil.
  3. By Ampere's law, any current-carrying conductor creates a magnetic field around it, which is in the direction perpendicular to the current.
  4. So this coil, which has a conductor wound on it, generates a magnetic field around it when it experiences electricity flow.

Inductor as a short circuit:

  1. An inductor behaves as a short circuit when a direct current is supplied.
  2. According to Ohm's law, “The voltage flowing across a conductor is directly proportional to the current flowing through it”. Mathematically, it is represented as V=IR, where V is voltage, I is current and R is resistance.
  3. In Direct current, there is no change in the current. So, by Ohm's law, the voltage across the conductor is 0.
  4. Consequently, the inductor acts as an ordinary wire and has 0 resistance. Therefore, it acts as a short circuit.

Hence, the inductor acts as a short circuit.
