Question

why ionic hydrides are called saline hydrides

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Ionic hydrides are called saline hydrides because of their reactivity. These salt-like hydrides are formed with active metals in groups 1 and 2 on the periodic table. Most of these hydrides are very volatile and react readily with a variety of compounds. The reaction of an ionic hydride and water yields hydrogen gas and the hydroxide salt.
