Question

Why is a double bond stronger than a single bond?

Open in App
Solution

Double Bond:

  • The two atoms contain two pairs of electrons, generating a double bond.
  • Because of its greater reactivity than a single bond, this form of connection is stronger than a single bond but less stable.
  • A double bond between two atoms is represented by the symbol double lines = (i.e., involving two electron pairs).
  • Examples of molecules having double bonds are O2,CO2, etc.

Reason for a double bond stronger than a single bond:

  • A double or triple bond is stronger than a single bond because it holds the atoms closer together and makes it more difficult to break.
  • So, a double bond requires more energy to break the bonds as compared to a single bond.

Hence, a double bond is stronger than a single bond.
