why is a split commutator is used in dc generator and not in ac generator?

In DC generators split commutators are used in place of split rings ,when two half rings of commutator are connected to the two ends to the two ends of generator coil ,then one carbon brush is in contact all the time with the coil moving down magnetic field .On the otherhand in an AC genertaor we connect the two ends of the coil to two rings of copper called slip rings.
